Lynn Conway
1938-2024
Co-authored "Introduction to VLSI Systems" (1980), the textbook that opened chip design to a generation.
Contributions
- 01IBM researcher who developed dynamic instruction scheduling, foundational to modern superscalar CPUs.
- 02Joined Xerox PARC, then collaborated with Carver Mead on the Mead-Conway VLSI design methodology.
- 03Her MPC79 multi-project chip program let universities tape out designs cheaply.
Why it matters for vlsi design rules
Conway and Mead's methodology decoupled who designs a chip from who fabricates it. Without that decoupling, the fabless model that Nvidia and AMD depend on does not exist.
