AI era (2012-present)
Jensen Huang
born 1963
Co-founded Nvidia in 1993; the CEO who turned graphics chips into AI accelerators and extended codesign across the entire stack.
Contributions
- 01Bet on CUDA in 2006, a decade before deep learning made the bet pay off.
- 02Extended codesign from chip-and-compiler to chip-CPU-network-rack-cluster-model, delivering a million-fold speedup over the decade where Moore's Law alone would have delivered roughly a hundredfold.
- 03Built the first rack-scale AI computer (Grace Blackwell NVL72), framing the rack rather than the GPU as the unit of compute.
- 04Survived multiple near-death moments (the early 2000s GPU wars, the cryptocurrency bust); Stanford MSEE alumnus.
Why it matters for full-stack codesign
Huang's CUDA bet was the canonical example of how a platform decision made a decade before its use case can compound into a moat. The extension of codesign across the full stack is what makes Nvidia uncatchable by any single-layer competitor. His Stanford CS153 lecture (May 2026) frames computing as being reinvented for the first time in 64 years.
